The Role of Distribution Management in Supply Chain Management


A Distributor is a person or entity that distributes the goods.

The flow of goods :
Distribution is the process of the delivery of finished goods from the manufacturer to the consumer.

The concept of distribution :
       a. Physic Distribution
Receive finished goods from the manufacturer, store and transmit it to the consumer.
      b. Intermodal
The transfer of goods from one transportation mode to another mode of transportation.
      c. Consolidation
Receive a variety of goods in small quantities, accumulate and repackaged in bigger packs.
      d. Cross Docking
Unloading and loading of goods from truck to truck or from trucks to container, without going through the storage shed.
     e. Unitisasi
Grouping items of various types and sources into a single group to be transported to the same destination.
     f. Containeritation
The classification of goods in the container the container.


Distribution Strategy :
a. Direct shipping (DS) service point to point
          1. There is no intermediary facilities, such as warehouses and                          distribution centers.
          2. The manufacturer send the goods directly to retail.
          3. For goods that are perishable, large volumes of goods and speciality                     products.
b. Strategic Warehousing (SW)
          1. Product stored in warehouse/distribution center before send to customers.
          2. User stuff is special product sellers like books and clothing.
          3. Goods are durable, large volume and high risk product.
c. Strategy Cross – Docking
Move products directly between transportation modes at specific places provided, without the use of a temporary warehouse facilities.


Distribution runs when implemented by the system and the mode of transportation.

Mode of distribution channels :
1.     Produsen  – Consumer
2.     Produsen – Retailer  –  Consumer
3.     Produsen – Distributor – Retailer – Consumer


Type of distribution channels:
1. Intensive Distribution
2. Selective Distribution
3. Exclusive distribution
